A buddy of mine is interested in starting up her own website covering news. Most likely statehouse reporting. Anyone have any favorite websites they turn to for news/gossip/what have you? We're looking for models to see what can be improved upon, or what we can steal.
Thanks in advance!

NPR has posted my story on its website. It's surreal seeing my name there. And Melissa Block intro'ed my story during the A segment of the first hour. That's... heaven. Here you go.

I have decided within the next six months I am going to have my tonsils removed. As well as my wisdom teeth. I've got insurance now. Big time, adult insurance. I've never had surgery... in fact, the whole idea of it terrifies me. But my tonsils are taking up my entire throat. And my wisdom teeth... they are well on their way to becoming a serious problem for me. RIP RIP!
My mom and brother are coming to visit today! Company! For now I'm going to (hopefully) finish In Cold Blood. It's so good y'all!

I hate my hair when it's long. I've grown out (haha) of getting any enjoyment out of it. So. With that said. I will probably SERIOUSLY THIS TIME get my hair cut this week or weekend. St. Vincent is my inspiration.

Now if only I could look that beautiful.

| What Ariel Rose Van Cleave Means | You are usually the best at everything ... you strive for perfection. You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive. You have the classic "Type A" personality.
You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You're always up to something. You have a ton of energy, and most people can't handle you. You're very intense. You definitely are a handful, and you're likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun.
You tend to be pretty tightly wound. It's easy to get you excited... which can be a good or bad thing. You have a lot of enthusiasm, but it fades rather quickly. You don't stick with any one thing for very long. You have the drive to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. Your biggest problem is making sure you finish the projects you start.
You are friendly, charming, and warm. You get along with almost everyone. You work hard not to rock the boat. Your easy going attitude brings people together. At times, you can be a little flaky and irresponsible. But for the important things, you pull it together.
You are relaxed, chill, and very likely to go with the flow. You are light hearted and accepting. You don't get worked up easily. Well adjusted and incredibly happy, many people wonder what your secret to life is.
You are well rounded, with a complete perspective on life. You are solid and dependable. You are loyal, and people can count on you. At times, you can be a bit too serious. You tend to put too much pressure on yourself.
You are the total package - suave, sexy, smart, and strong. You have the whole world under your spell, and you can influence almost everyone you know. You don't always resist your urges to crush the weak. Just remember, they don't have as much going for them as you do.
You are very hyper. You never slow down, even when it's killing you. You're the type of person who can be a workaholic during the day... and still have the energy to party all night. Your energy is definitely a magnet for those around you. People are addicted to your vibe.
You are very intuitive and wise. You understand the world better than most people. You also have a very active imagination. You often get carried away with your thoughts. You are prone to a little paranoia and jealousy. You sometimes go overboard in interpreting signals.
You are very open. You communicate well, and you connect with other people easily. You are a naturally creative person. Ideas just flow from your mind. A true chameleon, you are many things at different points in your life. You are very adaptable. |

Jonathan replied to an email I sent him last nite to tell me that Melissa Block also hurt her foot and might not come to Peoria. I think that would be fantastic if she couldn't make it.

I got an email earlier today from the Bradley Communications Department. They were asking me if I'd like to attend a breakfast with Melissa Block on the 25th of October. I figured since I had graduated it was all over and done with. I'd never meet her. I thought there was no goddamn chance. I was wrong! She's speaking the night before at Bradley, as well, so I think I'll figure out a way to go and listen. I might have a midterm though... I'll talk to Michaelson about it. I'm excited! Two NPR gals in a month... who knew. I love journalism.

Just in case some of you didn't know and wanted to be aware of it.... read this article from the SJR about some of Blagojevich's handy work. It's depressing to me.

Amber and I are sitting outside in the courtyard. We're both on our computers and both rambling to our friends on AIM and checking email/whatever. The pool is currently packed to the max with boozers and losers. We've heard several glass bottles clinking... glass isn't allowed near the pool. Someone should write them up. Just a little bit ago, there was some commotion from the gated pool area (everything is gated). Amber says "Two girls are making out in the pool." Awesome! Then she adds "What is this? Spring break? Do these people not have jobs? It's a Tuesday nite." This is why Amber and I get along.
Amber and I tried to play a game called "Pass the Pigs" earlier. It came with these rubbery pigs that you use as dice. It's an adult game of chance. The name alone sort of put me off... what makes it adult? Are the pigs nude? While Amber was reading the rules for the game (numerous and confusing), we found that if you roll the pigs and they wind up piggy back... this is considered an "unatural pig position and you will have to leave the game." Conversative pig dice game. We opted to not play it and instead filled our Journal Star coozies (thanks Amber) with Keystone Light and came outside. Refer to the paragraph above for the obvious fun we've been having.
There was a homeless man who was living in our alley when we moved in. Amber named him Charlie Brown and then started humming the song from the Charlie Brown movies. We decided that if he really wanted to, he could sleep in our giant closet on the first floor. It's big enough for a homeless man. Plus, we want his aluminum cans. We plan to make a small fortune on aluminum cans.
I'm sure other funny stuff has happened, but I can't remember now.
Earlier today I went to get my oil changed. Everyone is so goddamn friendly. I had geniune, nice conversations with three people while I was there this morning. The traffic is easy to deal with too. No one cuts you off or gets sassy or flips you off or turn into the turning lanes and wait for a chance to get into regular lanes of traffic. I love that. I'm so Midwest, it's disgusting. After my oil change, I drove around a little to get familiar with the city. Then I got a monthly parking pass. The guy in charge there is a bit of a weirdo, but that's what I like. His name is Sam and his friends were hanging out with him while at work. I'm saving money on the parking, but have to walk another few blocks to get there and back from the townhouse. I'll get over it.
Tomorrow I'm going to Peoria to get my transcript sent to UIS, talk to people about Peoria muni band, donate plasma in exchange for $$$ and get dinner with Erin Kennedy. Thursday is my interview with WTAX. Friday is one of my last days ever at WCBU and then back to Springfield for the state fair? It's going to be so goddamn hot.
|
|
|
Things I am thankful for:
- my health - the townhouse I'll be moving into on Friday - how different I am as compared to five years ago - friends who call me sometimes and tell me silly stories - friends who tag me in pictures of mermaids and lions - people who are polite on the phone - my go-get-'em attitude - my never-ending, never-ceasing, never-resting brain - how rational I really can be
Things that make me laugh: - I found a journal from five years ago. In it, I describe my experience at Bradley orientation. Included in that description is a rant about a kid who was a total douchebag and a snob. That kid was Stevie Mizek. I love him dearly now... look where we started out.
It's one of those days.

I've just spent the last few days in Peoria again. This time I stayed with Karen and Lindsay and it was such a good idea! I had non-stop fun and kept going to their parent's house for dinner! Food! Free! Plus, it was so damn tasty! I also got to hang out with their other sister Robin and their friend Kathy. How delightful they all are! I'm done for now with long stints in Peoria, though. I'm glad for it.
I'm still completely unsure about how to be sure I have enough money for moving into the townhouse and paying for all the things that come with it. Am I nervous? Of course! Is it bothering me so much? No no.
Tomorrow I have to find a wireless internet signal so I can prepare a CD to send down to Springfield for my possible job interview. Cross your fingers for me, bitches!
Sex and the City might become my new obsession. I've fought it and fought it and fought it.
Yesterday and today, I did the noon news for WCBU. I didn't do TOO bad, but I didn't do as well as I would have hoped. Maybe I will get another chance on Friday. Anyone interested in listening to them, I actually have them up for download. It was the only way I could transfer them off the computers at the station.
I keep being approached by people to do more and more Peoria related things. I'm trying so hard to say no. Some of the things involve money. Ugh!
Watching Undeclared post-graduation is so funny. So much funnier than it was pre-graduation! Harhar, college! Jokes jokes!

Amber and I officially got the townhouse today! Booyah!
And yesterday I received an email from a chick who runs a station in Springfield. She asked if I wanted to work there part time during the fall semester. Well, yes! I do!
Oh Springfield... the land of wonders. And Abe Lincoln. I can't wait to be two blocks from the Lincoln Museum. And other historic sites.

I'm going to be spending yet another weekend in Peoria. Some guy died and I am going to get 50 bucks for singing at his funeral with a choir. Then 30 bucks on Sunday morning for more singing. Phew. Hello money!
(I'm getting my GG fix right now. It's so nice.)

Well, since I'll be in Springfield and have a little more money at my fingertips... I think I am for REAL going to take flight lessons. No more saying "maybeeee," but instead I will say "yes yes!" So there you go. I'll be so well rounded when all is said and done I'll have myself a B.A., and M.A. and a pilot's license! Ha, look out.

This weekend I went to Chicago for Pitchfork. I arrived Saturday afternoon (after driving through the hellish-oh there's a Cubs game-traffic). Imran and I began our hour and a half (!!!!!) journey to Union Park because the blue line was under construction. Ugh! It should have taken 20 minutes! Oh well, we made a weird friend that we got rid of as soon as possible and have another story to add to our arsenal. Believe me, we talked about it too much all day long. I met up with James, Lauren and Chooper. We made fun of things, laughed a lot and then decided to get out. Imran stayed and the other four of us ran off to get cleaned up, eat up and grab some brewskies for the party at Imran and Stevie's later. We went to a pub in Wrigleyville (cos Chooper is LOADED now) and ate some food at a pub. On the way there, we talked to several drunken people (like I said, Cubs game). Two fellas who were holding eachother up... a couple that was asking for high fives and slapping asses... people probably feeding their dog beers... boys saying things like "those girls are talking about vaginas, why can't we?"... and people starting fights about silly things. Ah, Chicago. The party at Imran's was hopping and I got very drunk after Chooper kept calling me a pussy and saying I should be drinking more vodka. So I did. After a 4 a.m. burrito run, I passed out on Imran and Stevie's floor around 5 a.m.
The next day at Pitchfork was the big event. Jamie Lidell stole the show in my opinion. He danced around, created amazing beats and made my heart melt with his silky voice. Ah, to find a man like Jamie Lidell. He's very funny too! Love love him. We also saw a sweet Brazilian band, Of Montreal, Menomena, I heard Stephen Malkmus and The New Pornographers. No Neko Case though. That made the performance a little less than I wanted, but I still danced and had fun. There was a big dancing band this time around though... I think there always should be. The first year, The Go! Team played and I danced so damn hard. More of that! More of that! Anyways, the day as a whole was good and silly and I wasn't too hot or too tired.. at least I tried not to act like it. After everything was said and done, Imran and I had even more transportation problems (AKA we walked two miles before finding a goddamn taxi to take us to his apartment). We made it back alive, ate some tasty food, I schooled him while playing Guitar Hero II and then passed out on the floor again. So tired. So exhausted.
All in all, the show was hot, dirty, sweaty and packed. 50,000 people at the very least were in attendance. So many tall people stood in front of me, but I was courteous and moved a little to the left or right. By the end though, I got snotty and started saying things like "WHERE YOU GOING?" and they would reply "My friends are up there!" and I would say "OH YAH, WE ALL GOT FRIENDS UP THERE!" Haha, made me laugh.
Otherwise, now that I'm back, I have to remember how I have no money and need to tighten the old purse strings. And I have to work on my feature. No more dicking around.

yesterday, amber and i drove to springfield in search of apartments. we called about a dozen numbers and everyone was generally snotty or not helpful whatsoever. it was pouring down rain and landlords gave us the cold shoulder. "i can show you around tomorrow if you want." UGH! we felt generally downtrodden and run through the muck. damn these people in springfield! after heading back to peoria and amber emailing the current PAR kids for some help in looking for an apartment... some of those fellas bit! they promised to let us look around if we came down today... so, we decided, what else do we have to do? we drove back down to springfield again.
we arrive and head directly to the lovely apartment complex. springfield is easy to navigate and i am feeling good... amber is equally excited. we show up and talk to nate. we look around the apartment and decided "WE WANT IT NO MATTER WHAT, FUCK THE OTHER FUCKERS!" we blow off the other appointments. nate tells us about the apartment, tells us about his classmates, the classes we should take and which we shouldn't, how often he drinks, drops the words "fuck" and "motherfucker" one thousand times... then tells us we're heading over to meet tom. tom is radio. nate is print. tom and i talk shop and they make fun of a girl who is probably one of the worst radio people i've ever heard. KA-KOW-SKI. she's terrible and they talk more about beer, champagne, whiskey, a friend of theirs breaking into el presidente, job offers and lack thereof, charlie wheeler cuddling up with a cup of coffee and the state budget and how the maintenance people are awesome.
amber and i left feeling that we will not live anywhere else. there's just no way. we want those apartments, we really wanted nate's. amber is calling tomorrow to ask about moving in and nate is going to mention that we are interested in taking his apartment. here's a rundown of the wonderful things that the place entails: - a pool (amber is really excited about that) - grills and free propane! - no stairs when we move in - kick ass maintenance guys - lovely patio furniture for sitting outside and eating/reading/conversing - locked and SAFE - 325 dollars per person - A WASHER AND DRYER - A GARBAGE DISPOSAL - A DISHWASHER
the place is heaven. we want it. we won't stop till we get it. funny plans are in the making and living with amber will be a lot of fun.
in other news... it was fucking hot at the muni band concert tonite and i had to wear a wool jacket. yuck.
i just looked at inba.net, which is a site for illinois broadcasters. they have job listings on there as well and i am feeling that my future is a little less bleek than i had initially thought. i just might get a radio job! i will be living in the middle of goddamn nowhere, but you have to start from somewhere and work your way up.

there isn't much explanation yet, but i figured i would link you to some photos i took while in italy.
my security deposit was mailed to me. my mom is in posession of it and is bringing it to peoria tomorrow. i hope i got a good chunk of it back.
MORE BACH! never ending BACH!
